Heavy Snow，the 21st of the twenty-four Chinese solar terms, is the third solar term in winter, reflecting the characteristics of the climate, and is characterized by a significant drop in temperature and an increase in precipitation.

The twenty-four Chinese solar terms are the products of agricultural civilization, and the climatic elements affecting agricultural production are mainly precipitation, temperature and light. The Heavy Snow festival, like the Light Snow festival, is a festival reflecting the trend of temperature and precipitation changes, and it is a reflection of farming culture for the season. Heavy Snow is a festival reflecting climate characteristics, climate elements including precipitation, temperature, light, etc., of which precipitation is an important element of climate. 

Meteorology will be rain, snow, hail and other water vapor condensation from the sky to the ground, are called "precipitation". The arrival of the Heavy Snow season means that the weather is getting colder and the amount of precipitation is increasing.

Pickling meat, having a snowball fight, enjoying the snow scene and tonic are all folk customs of the heavy snow festival. There is an old saying in Nanjing, which is called "Pickling vegetables in Light Snow, pickling meat in Heavy Snow". At this time, cured meat, sausages, salted fish and other cured products will be hung on the door and windowsill of every household, forming a beautiful landscape. If it happens to be snowing heavily at this time, people will be keen to have snowball fights and enjoy the snow scene in the ice and snow.

"Light Snow seals the land, Heavy Snow seals the river". In the north, there is a natural landscape of "a thousand miles of ice, ten thousand miles of snow". In the south, there are also charming pictures of "snowflakes flying and silver all over the sky". 

During the Heavy Snow festival, the river is frozen, and people can enjoy skating and playing.
